During The Unexpected Guest, we could not find a brocade style fabric with the color the scenic designer wanted. Instead, I acquired a cream colored brocade fabric from JOANN Fabrics and I dyed it to the color we needed. I then loosely patterned the pieces and stapled them to the chair.
All of Tom Thumb's props were oversized to make the actor look smaller than he was. The director of Barnum asked for a nine foot tall backed chair for the actor to sit in during his song. To fit through the stage entrance, we had to both build the chair narrow and create a break point on the chair where the top could be taken off and then reassembled. We created a pealed paint look by applying paint in globs with a block of wood.
The banquettes for Top Hat were completely built from scratch. Their intended use was both as a bench inside the hotel and as a carriage ride in the park. To create this look, we build the banquette with a pocket for the wheel axil, so that the wheel can be removed and replaced throughout the show.
