Mrs. Sphinktur was a terrible school teacher who is the villain Fritz's reason for her hatred for music. The puppet has bones of PEX and PVC pipe, with a face formed of Varaform and expanding foam. Her face was patterned out of car headliner foam and muslin, and her arms and body were made out of the same dyed muslin as the scenic banners. She has flicker LED bulbs soldered to a battery pack in her eyeballs.
Jumbo's design references warhorses and was meant to be used by one actor or by four actors. His bones were made of 1/2" plywood and weaving reeds. He is skinned in leather and burlap sewn into his reeds. A system of winged bolts holds his ears on, so they are easily removable backstage. Inside of his eyeballs are vintage oval lightbulbs.
The secretary bird trophy was created as a metaphor for the plot of the show. Secretary birds are mostly ground dwellers, only going up to the trees to nest. Richard is meant to be the secretary bird, who has caught a snake, or murderer, in his home. The body of the bird is foam sheets reinforced with steel rods. I skinned the bird in muslin so that any gaps in the feathers would be less noticeable and so that the inside of the form was accessible by removing panels of the skin for repairs.
